DIY CARDBOARD SPACESHIP

The original Cardboard and Umbrella Spaceship costume

On the weekend I posted on my social media pages about a cardboard spaceship costume the kids and I made using an umbrella, some cardboard and Makedo screws. Since then I have had so many enquiries from people who want to make the cardboard spaceship for halloween. I decided to do a quick post about how easy it was to put together with dimensions and links.

Steps:

  1. Using single walled cardboard cut out 8 panels (using the dimensions in the below diagram).
  2. Score the panels where the dotted lines are indicated.
  3. Punch holes along the side as indicated below (using the provided tool by Makedo)
  4. Join the panels together with the Makedo screws (using the provided tool by Makedo)
  5. Place over the open umbrella and secure with clear tape.
Easy as that!

Making adjustments to the size:
Make sure your top measurement matches the size of your umbrella. For example, if your top measurement is 28 cm and you subtract the 3 cm overlap, you’ll get 25 cm. This means that when your umbrella is open, it should measure 25 cm across, approximately 2 cm above the rim (this is where the cardboard will sit).
If your measurement differs, you’ll need to adjust all dimensions using the formula below:
(your desired measurement) ÷ 28  = X
Then, multiply all template measurements by this number (X) to scale them correctly to your umbrella size.
